Class

Breaking, from the floor up

Breaking is a dance of the floor. Dancers 10 to 12 meet on Tuesday afternoons and dancers 13 to 16 on Tuesday evenings, and Duron teaches both. Spins and other power moves come last, on mats, with a teacher beside the dancer, and only when the teacher says a dancer is ready.

  • 60 minutes for 10 to 12, 75 for 13 to 16

  • Classes of up to 10 and up to 12

  • Power moves only on mats, by the teacher's call

What a breaking class is like

The same five parts, from standing to the floor.

  1. 01

    Step 1: Warm up

A longer warm-up for wrists, shoulders and legs, because the whole body is on the floor.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Toprock

Standing steps that set the rhythm before a dancer goes down.

  3. 03

    Step 3: Footwork

Steps on the hands and feet around the floor, learned slowly and counted.

  4. 04

    Step 4: Freezes

Holds that finish a phrase, practiced a few at a time.

  5. 05

    Step 5: The circle

A cool-down in a circle, with anyone who wants to stepping in.

Before you start

Before the first class

  • What to wear

A T-shirt, joggers or shorts, and clean sneakers that only come out inside the studio. Hair is tied back. Knee pads are optional and bought by the family.

  • Length and size

Sixty minutes for ages 10 to 12 and 75 for ages 13 to 16, in classes of up to 10 and up to 12.

  • Telling us about pain

If something hurts, tell your teacher before class. We change what the dancer does that day, and nobody is asked to push through pain.
