Class

Hip hop foundations, ages 10 to 12

This is where most dancers begin. The class is 60 minutes, it meets twice a week, and Layal teaches every groove and step slowly enough to catch. By the end of a session, a dancer has a combination they can show.

  • 60 minutes, Monday and Wednesday

  • Classes of up to 10

  • A grown-up collects every dancer

What a foundations class is like

Five parts, in the same order every class.

  1. 01

    Step 1: Warm up

A few minutes on the floor to wake up the legs, back and shoulders.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Grooves

Bounce, rock and a few other basic grooves, counted out loud and then to the music.

  3. 03

    Step 3: Across the floor

Steps in lines, a few dancers at a time, with the teacher calling the count.

  4. 04

    Step 4: A combination

A short phrase, built up a little each class, that the group performs together.

  5. 05

    Step 5: The circle

Everyone stands in a circle to cool down, and anyone who wants to can step in for a few counts.

Before you start

Before the first class

  • What to wear

A T-shirt, joggers or shorts, and clean sneakers that only come out inside the studio. Hair is tied back.

  • Length and size

Sixty minutes, in classes of up to 10, on Monday and Wednesday afternoons.

  • Moving on

When a teacher thinks a dancer is ready for the teen class, she says so at the end of a session and talks it over with the family.
